1,800 TPD is captured using an MDEA-based chemical absorption process
Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL), Angul is inviting expressions of interest (EoI) for offtake of 3,600 tons per day (tpd) of CO2 across its two units.
The company is looking for a recognized company with a proven track record to utilize captured CO2. Interested bidders are invited for direct sale of 99.5% captured CO2 or willing to put the downstream unit to utilize captured CO2 into valuable chemicals like ethanol, methanol, urea etc.
JSPL’s Angul plant generates approximately 3,600 TPD of CO2 through two streams: 1,800 TPD is captured using an MDEA-based chemical absorption process, delivering 99.5% purity, while the remaining 1,800 TPD is captured via physical absorption using chilled methanol (Rectisol), with 88% purity, which can be further upgraded to 99%+ using PSA technology.
This CO2 is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications including fuels, chemicals, food processing etc. JSPL Angul, with its advanced infrastructure, strategic location, and strong commitment to sustainability, offers a reliable and scalable platform for long-term partnerships.
Land and utilities may be provided based on the proposed overall plant configuration. Interested parties are invited to submit EoI within 30 days of this notice.
JSPL has commissioned 6 MTPA integrated steel plants at Angul. Spread over 3,500 acres, the plant can ultimately host a steelmaking infrastructure of 12.5 MTPA.
In the first phase, the company has set up India’s most modern 6 MTPA integrated steel plant at Angul that comprises India’s largest 4,554 cubic meter Blast Furnace, 3 MTPA Basic oxygen Furnace (BOF), World’s first Coal Gasification Plant (CGP) for steelmaking and world’s largest syngas based 2 MTPA DRI Plant. The plant also comprises a 1.5 MTPA Bar Mill, a 1.2 MTPA Plate Mill and a 810MW Captive Power Plant. The plate mill is capable of producing 5-meter wide plates, making it the widest to be ever produced in the country. The complex also has India’s largest high speed 2.3 MTPA Billet Caster and a 1.7 MTPA Slab Caster.
In terms of the product portfolio, Angul has the capability to manufacture special grade plates for various critical applications like boilers, ship building, petroleum pipes, high strength grades for automotive and earth movers, structural steel for oil exploration platforms, grades for making warships, ballistic launch applications and bullet proof vehicles, stainless steel low thickness plates for nuclear application. Additionally, with its diverse product range, comprising billets, plates and a host of others, the steel plant will cater to the burgeoning demand matrix for these products.
Among the largest private sector investments in Odisha, the plant has been built at an investment of Rs. 33,000 crore, with the potential to generate large-scale direct and indirect employment for the state.
India is the 5th largest, fastest growing global economy and the 2nd largest producer of steel after China. Growing global demand for low carbon/green steel, Indian steel industry has an unparalleled potential for CO2 reduction in steel-making and hence an opportunity for CO2 offtake from off gases.
