QatarEnergy suspends manufacturing of urea, polymers and methanol

The downstream halts are a direct consequence of the LNG production suspension, as these plants rely on LNG feedstocks for their operations

  • By ICN Bureau | March 04, 2026

QatarEnergy has halted production of petrochemicals, fertilizers, and metals, following Iranian drone strikes on key energy infrastructure. This downstream shutdown follows the suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations at its major plants on March 2.

The company has shut down the production of polymers and methanol. QatarEnergy operates major polyethylene plants in Mesaieed with a combined capacity of approximately 2.2 million tonnes per year.

Output of urea has been stopped. Qatar is a major global player in this sector, accounting for roughly 14% of the world's urea supply. All sulphur production, representing about 8% of global seaborne trade, has ceased.

QatarEnergy has begun issuing force majeure notices to select buyers, including India's Petronet LNG, as vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains at a virtual standstill.
