“The Indian chemicals and petrochemicals industry has been undergoing metamorphosis. The transformation, supported by policy reforms, are accelerating the growth. However, the moot question arising out of this is how to achieve this growth in a sustainable and responsible manner,” Pravin Prashant, Editor, Indian Chemical News, said.
Globally, chemical and petrochemical giants are taking strategic decisions by trimming/hiving off their portfolios to achieve the sustainability goals. Indian chemical companies do not have the liberty to take this route. Hence, these companies need to devise suitable strategies to meet their sustainability target.
Several multinational chemical companies have launched transformational initiatives centered upon sustainability. They are committing to integrating circular economy principles into its business models; designing 100% of its products and processes using sustainability criteria including the principles of green chemistry and reducing GHG emissions.
The commitments on emission control made by India at the recent Glasgow COP26 summit of achieving net zero target by 2070 and reducing Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 1 billion MT by 2030 is expected to benefit the country in the long-term with new technologies in energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and green fuels etc. This is likely to attract investment in billions and also requires a focused approach.
The chemical industry is playing a leadership role in driving sustainability by adoption of green molecules and adopting sustainability practices on a larger scale. The emergence of a low-carbon, circular economy is now possible and many governments and regulators are starting to show their support. A collaborative effort by industry, academia, and government is needed to achieve a sustainable society.
He further added that that sustainability is the key for industries across the globe. “We aim to discuss the measures adopted by global companies to achieve ‘Net carbon Zero’ and how Indian companies can adopt the global best practices,” Prashant added.
The key discussion points for Net Carbon Zero session are: Companies Net Carbon Zero Plan; How will this pan out with respect to chemicals, petrochemicals, and energy sector; International benchmarks in chemicals, petrochemicals, and energy sector; Improving resource and energy efficiency to produce chemicals and materials; Using sustainable waste or bio-based feedstocks; Collaborative model for achieving sustainability; Awareness campaigns for adoption of sustainable practices; and CO2 capture, storage and utilization.
