Mitsubishi Chemical Aqua Solutions (MCAS), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation announced that MCAS’s global project “On-site Water Treatment and Supply System for Hospitals in Myanmar” has been accepted to United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)’s project “Strengthening the capacity of developing countries to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic through appropriate technology transfer from Japan.”

UNIDO helps Japanese companies disseminate their technologies to effectively combat various infectious diseases including COVID-19 in developing countries, with the goal of improving health and sanitation.

Although a stable, clean, and safe supply of water is essential to prevent infectious diseases and improve the health and sanitation environment, Myanmar does not have an adequate water infrastructure. To solve these issues, MCAS will install a membrane filtration water treatment system at an urban hospital, where infectious disease prevention is a top priority. MCAS will conduct a pilot project utilizing the on-site water treatment and supply system in cooperating with its local partners, MW Aqua Solutions Co., Ltd. (a subsidiary of MCC) and ITOCHU Corporation Yangon branch.

The system that will be installed in Myanmar can use a combination of appropriate technology to treat water from any source—groundwater, public supply water, river water, and so on—to a level that meets the World Health Organization’s drinking water standards. The system is especially suitable for local operation due to its unmanned operation features and unitized configuration which shorten construction time and simplifies installation.

Furthermore, with a remote monitoring system that allows monitoring real-time data such as the system’s operational status, water quality, and errors from Japan, MCAS will establish an operational structure that can respond quickly to problems and maintenance needs from both Myanmar and Japan.

MCAS will continue to cooperate with UNIDO and other international organizations to provide solutions that can ensure a safe and reliable supply of water around the world.
