Air Water India acquires gas plant at Tata Steel

Enhancing industrial gas infrastructure to support India’s steel and semiconductor growth

  • By ICN Bureau | October 23, 2025

Air Water India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air Water, has announced the acquisition of a large-scale gas plant currently under construction at Tata Steel Limited’s Jamshedpur facility in Jharkhand, Eastern India.

Along with the acquisition, the company has entered into a 20-year long-term operation and maintenance contract with Tata Steel. The new plant is scheduled to commence operations in November 2025.

Once operational, the facility will provide Tata Steel with a reliable and stable supply of industrial gases, while also producing liquefied gases—such as liquid oxygen, nitrogen, and argon—to meet the growing demand from merchant customers across Eastern and Northern India. This project marks a significant milestone in Air Water’s strategy to accelerate the expansion of its industrial gas business and strengthen its supply network across India’s key industrial regions.

The new plant—Air Water India Onsite Fourth Plant, Jamshedpur—will be located adjacent to Tata Steel’s steel works and will produce oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and their liquefied forms. It is designed to achieve an oxygen production capacity of approximately 1,800 tons per day (around 52,500 Nm³/h). This facility will not only support Tata Steel’s production requirements but will also strengthen the supply of liquefied gases to diverse industries across Eastern and Northern India.

Through this acquisition, Air Water India is contributing to the growth of both established core industries such as steel and emerging sectors such as semiconductors. The project represents another step forward in the company’s mission to expand its industrial gas operations and reinforce Japan-India collaboration in advanced manufacturing and technology.
