Amogy and KOWA forge Japan hydrogen push using ammonia cracking technology

The move comes as Japan accelerates its hydrogen economy ambitions

  • By ICN Bureau | June 24, 2026
Amogy and KOWA Company have launched a partnership to develop ammonia cracking-based hydrogen supply solutions in Japan, formalizing cooperation that follows an MoU signed in April 2026.

The initiative targets early deployment opportunities in Japan’s Chubu region, where both companies will evaluate how ammonia can function as a scalable hydrogen carrier. The focus is on enabling practical delivery of low-carbon hydrogen for industrial users and future energy infrastructure.

The move comes as Japan accelerates its hydrogen economy ambitions, with ammonia increasingly positioned as a strategic solution to hydrogen’s storage and transport challenges. By cracking ammonia back into hydrogen at the point of use, the approach could reduce reliance on new hydrogen infrastructure while leveraging established ammonia logistics networks.

The partnership pairs Amogy’s proprietary ammonia cracking technology with KOWA’s long-standing industrial footprint and market network in Japan. Together, the companies aim to strengthen hydrogen supply chains and support national decarbonization goals.

“We are pleased to be working with KOWA to support the development of Japan’s hydrogen economy,” said Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy.

“As one of the world's leading markets for hydrogen and ammonia adoption, Japan is uniquely positioned to pioneer innovative energy solutions. We believe partnerships like this can play an important role in demonstrating how ammonia cracking technology can support the development of future hydrogen supply infrastructure and accelerate the broader hydrogen economy.”
