Grupa Azoty Zakłady Azotowe Kędzierzyn is implementing a capex project that will involve upgrading the synthesis gas (syngas) compression unit, which is supplying its ammonia plant. The general contractor is Grupa Azoty Polskie Konsorcjum Chemiczne, and the total value of the project is estimated at PLN 180 million (around $43 million).

The objective of the project is to rebuild the synthesis gas compression capacities for the Ammonia Plant through the installation of new compressors.

“The project is designed to increase the ammonia capacities while optimising production costs. Undertaken as an element of the Grupa Azoty Group’s new strategy until 2030, the project is consistent with the Best Available Techniques (BAT) in the field of energy for ammonia production,” says Tomasz Hinc, President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty S.A.

The scope of the contract with the project’s general contractor covers the construction of buildings, process facilities and auxiliaries, as well as the installation, commissioning, and start-up of a compressor unit.

“We have already signed the project contract and handed over the site to the contractor. Work is currently under way to build the compressor station, pumping station, circulating water pool and auxiliary buildings. We expect the project to be completed in the first half of 2023,” says Paweł Stańczyk, President of the Management Board of Grupa Azoty ZAK.
