Hindustan Zinc, Tata Steel deepen green push with low-carbon zinc deal

The move signals a decisive shift by two industrial giants to hardwire climate goals into core operations and procurement

In a major boost to India’s decarbonisation drive, Hindustan Zinc has expanded its long-standing partnership with Tata Steel to scale up the use of EcoZen, its low-carbon zinc solution, in sustainable steel manufacturing.

The move signals a decisive shift by two industrial giants to hardwire climate goals into core operations and procurement. EcoZen — Asia’s first low-carbon zinc — is produced using renewable energy and delivers a carbon footprint of under 1 tonne of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of zinc, nearly 75% lower than the global average.

By cutting emissions at the raw material stage, the product is set to ripple through the value chain, giving downstream sectors a powerful tool to curb their carbon output.

Speaking on the development Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said "EcoZen represents our vision to offer sustainable metal solutions that support the evolving needs of global manufacturing. Our partnership with Tata Steel is a significant milestone in scaling up the adoption of low-carbon zinc and reinforcing greener supply chains across India’s industrial ecosystem."

Zinc remains critical to galvanising steel, protecting it from corrosion and extending its lifespan across industries from infrastructure to renewable energy. But it also contributes significantly to steel’s embedded carbon footprint — a challenge EcoZen directly addresses.

The impact is substantial: switching to EcoZen can help avoid nearly 400 kg of CO₂ emissions per tonne of steel galvanised compared to conventional zinc, offering companies a clear pathway to cut Scope 3 emissions.

Commenting on the collaboration, Ranjan Sinha, Chief Procurement Officer, Tata Steel, said "Tata Steel congratulates its strategic partner, Hindustan Zinc, on the delivery of Ecozen (a pioneering environment friendly Zinc metal) to our Sahibabad plant. This collaboration underscores our shared commitments to sustainable practices and advancing green technologies amongst our supplier eco-system."

The agreement builds on a partnership spanning more than two decades, now evolving into a sharper focus on sustainability, responsible sourcing, and climate-aligned growth.
