ACWA, Air Products, Neom sign $900 mn EPC deal for green hydrogen project

The complex is scheduled to start production in 2026

ACWA Power, Air Products and Neom are moving on with the realisation of a green hydrogen-to-ammonia complex on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast with the signing of an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth $900 million.

ACWA issued a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) at the stock market filing in relation to the EPC contract for the Neom Green Hydrogen Project.

The project was launched by ACWA Power and Air Products last year. The partners plan to build a USD-5-billion green hydrogen-to-ammonia complex in Neom, a cross-border city planned on the Red Sea coast in the northwestern part of the kingdom. The facility will use over 4 GW of renewable energy to produce hydrogen that will be converted into ammonia and exported by Air Products to global markets. The area was chosen because of its abundance of sunlight, wind and empty land to place solar panels and turbines.

The companies will use 120 Thyssenkrupp AG electrolyzers, each of them about 40 meters long, to split hydrogen from water. The fuel will be shipped from Saudi Arabia as ammonia, which is easier to transport than hydrogen in gaseous form.

The complex is scheduled to start production in 2026.
