EF Polymer is creating 100 per cent bio-based, environmentally friendly polymers by utilizing inedible agricultural waste
Toyoda Gosei Co. has announced its investment in EF Polymer K.K., a startup pioneering the development of super-absorbent polymers derived entirely from natural materials such as orange and banana peels.
EF Polymer is creating 100 per cent bio-based, environmentally friendly polymers by utilizing inedible agricultural waste.
When mixed into soil, these polymers significantly enhance water retention, reducing the amount of water required for crop cultivation. As climate change accelerates droughts and global water shortages, this innovation is expected to play a vital role in promoting sustainable agriculture.
Toyoda Gosei has long been applying its expertise in polymer technology to advance the recycling of petroleum-based plastics and rubber. By investing in EF Polymer, the company aims to support the wider adoption of environmentally responsible super-absorbent polymers while exploring potential technical collaborations with the startup.
This investment, completed in August 2025 through Toyoda Gosei’s Corporate Venture Capital Department, reflects the company’s commitment to advancing solutions that align with global sustainability goals and contribute to a circular economy.
