Ucore and Sumitomo Corporation of Americas forge strategic rare earth supply chain alliance

The companies also intend to work together under Ucore’s Global Partnership Initiative with the Government of Canada

Ucore Rare Metals has announced a strategic cooperation framework with Sumitomo Corporation of Americas to strengthen and diversify rare earth supply chains across North America and allied markets.

The agreement sets out joint efforts to secure rare earth feedstock for Ucore’s planned Louisiana Strategic Metals Complex (SMC), while also developing downstream offtake pathways for separated rare earth products.

The focus is on middle and heavy rare earth elements—materials essential for high-performance magnets and advanced technologies, particularly in Japan, while preserving supply for broader North American and allied processing.

At the center of the partnership is Ucore’s RapidSX processing technology, being developed for deployment at its Louisiana facility. Combined with Sumitomo’s global sourcing network, logistics strength, and market access in Japan, the collaboration aims to build a more resilient and geographically diversified rare earth value chain.

The companies also intend to work together under Ucore’s Global Partnership Initiative with the Government of Canada, positioning the alliance as part of a broader push to reduce dependence on concentrated global supply sources.

Under the framework, Sumitomo will act as a distribution partner for designated separated rare earth products sold into selected Japanese industrial markets and other mutually agreed applications.

Both sides emphasized that the collaboration will expand across the rare earth value chain over time, subject to commercial terms and existing commitments.

Ucore is advancing its North American rare earth strategy through its Louisiana SMC project and ongoing demonstration work with Canadian government support, while Sumitomo brings long-standing experience in global rare earth sourcing, trading, and supply chain development.

The announcement underscores accelerating efforts among Western and allied economies to secure critical mineral supply chains amid rising demand for advanced manufacturing, clean energy technologies, and defense applications.
