Huntsman India, a global manufacturer and marketer of differentiated chemicals, said it had commissioned a 180 kilo watts (KW) rooftop solar facility at its state-of-the-art polyurethanes manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune as part of the company’s commitment towards building a sustainable and low-carbon economy to support carbon neutrality.

The solar facility is expected to generate 3,00,000 kilo watt hour of power annually, about 60 percent of the plant’s total energy requirement. The system is connected with the state-government run power grid via net metering, which ensures a balanced load and also feeds surplus power back into the grid.

A 180 KW solar power plant at Huntsman’s Chakan Site will be used to meet almost entire day's power requirements. The system will be on net metering together with grid power. The net metering mechanism ensures that load is balanced, and any surplus power can be fed back into the grid.

“We are set to save 35 percent of energy cost with the installation of the solar facility. The project has been implemented with full adherence to environment, health and safety norms and commissioned in record four months. It is a critical milestone for us at Huntsman to achieve a sustainable energy led future and walk the path of green and clean environment,” Rahul Tikoo, MD, India Subcontinent, Huntsman International (India).

Huntsman products enable approximately 750 million tonnes of lifetime emissions to be removed from the planet each year. Whether it is wind energy, fuel efficiency, transportation electrification, or home efficiency, Huntsman products are integrally involved in ensuring a brighter world for future generations.

Chakan is a key manufacturing base for Huntsman globally and one of the large production sites of the company in India. It has been built adhering to global standards and is equipped with all necessary technologies to ensure safe and environment-friendly operations. This site hosts the production facilities for the MDI-based Polyurethanes business units that serves over 500 customers in neighboring countries in the footwear, automotive and construction space.

Over the past few years, the site has focused on optimal use of resources to ensure minimum impact on the environment and promote sustainable development. This manufacturing site stands out for its exemplary work in terms of helping the community located in and around the plant in Chakan.
