The Indian chemical industry is an industry-of-industries with a combined turnover of US $160 billion growing at 100 basis points faster than India’s GDP, making it an important sector to propel the growth of the nation’s economy. Being one of the most diversified industries, the chemical industry in India covers more than 80,000 commercial products and is expected to double its size at US $300 billion by 2025.

The government is swiftly implementing various schemes announced under the Rs. 20.97 lakh crore (US $265 billion) Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan package which is going to have a multiplier effect on the Indian economy. The potential of the chemicals and petrochemicals sector is huge and the industry needs to take advantage of various reliefs/incentives provided under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Package’. The government is also working on revamping PCPIR policy for rapid growth through a mix of right incentives to strengthen India's manufacturing base and attract new investments.

The effects of the Coronavirus pandemic will certainly echo through many industries and their supply chains, providing an opportunity to learn and most likely change the way they work in the future.

ICN’s upcoming initiative of “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Chemical Series 2020” aims to highlight success stories of self-reliant initiatives adopted by the industry towards making India a truly empowered nation.
