Boosting Poland’s energy security, oil and gas firm ORLEN has officially started production at the Różańsko natural gas field in the country's West Pomeranian region, tapping estimated reserves of 1.2 billion cubic meters (bcm).
The development is tied to the ongoing expansion of the Dębno Oil and Gas Extraction Facility, which is set to increase output from surrounding fields.
“Domestic oil and gas production is a cornerstone of our energy security. At present, we source approximately one fifth of our natural gas requirements from Poland's indigenous resources – some 3.5 bcm per annum.
"As demand for natural gas grows in the years ahead, we plan to increase production progressively, targeting 4 bcm by 2030. The hydrocarbons we extract underpin the wider economy: our gas supplies power generation and district heating, our crude oil is consumed as feedstock by domestic petrochemical and refining facilities, whilst our sulphur is a key input for fertiliser and tyre manufacturing,” said Wiesław Prugar, Member of the ORLEN Management Board, Upstream.
The Różańsko field is expected to add up to 130 million cubic meters of natural gas annually.
ORLEN plans to operate the site for around 20 years, coinciding with a forecast peak in Poland’s domestic gas demand. Gas from the field will primarily fuel combined heat and power plants in Kostrzyn nad Odrą and Gorzów Wielkopolski, while crude oil and liquid sulphur—produced partly via a new gas desulphurisation unit—will supply Polish industrial customers.
The project involved upgrading three existing wells, expanding associated infrastructure, and constructing a pipeline linking Różańsko to the Dębno facility, one of Poland’s largest production complexes.
The Dębno site has also been upgraded with an 8 MW cogeneration unit using gas from neighboring fields, achieving full self-sufficiency in electricity and process heat, with surplus power fed into the national grid. The expansion has also enabled higher production from the nearby Cychry field.
Strengthening domestic production is a key pillar of ORLEN’s Strategy 2035, which aims to reach 4 bcm of gas output in Poland by 2030. The group is simultaneously developing projects on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and pursuing international investments to achieve 12 bcm of gas from equity production by the end of the decade.
