Syensqo acquires controlling stake in Azerys

Bolt-on acquisition in Morocco expands capabilities in the naturals consumer market and demonstrates our steadfast dedication to sustainable innovation

Syensqo has completed the acquisition of a controlling stake in Azerys, a specialist in rosemary extraction with assets in El Jadida, Morocco. Today, Azerys produces a 100% natural plant-based, non GMO preservatives range based on rosemary extract, which are able to replace chemical food additives, aligned with consumer demand for more natural food ingredients. This bolt-on acquisition complements Syensqo’s leading activities in natural vanillin produced from rice bran and allows the company to expand its capabilities in renewable consumer solutions.

Similar to other recent acquisitions, such as Jin Young Bio and Bayer’s global seed coatings business, and investments such as in Suanfarma, it aligns with the strategic focus of Syensqo’s Renewable Materials and Biotechnology Growth Platform.

“Natural preservatives are a growing segment in the bioeconomy and rosemary extract is a key product in food preservation, requested by customers in this space. As the leading supplier of vanillin to the world, we have an excellent reputation of quality and service and we will bring the same values to this new field,” Jo Grosemans, Head of Business Development for the Renewable Materials and Biotechnology Platform.

“This acquisition serves the company’s mission to deliver sustainable, natural solutions and we are looking forward to exploring new possibilities through the power of green extraction technologies,” Dr. Ilham Kadri, CEO, Syensqo.

As a specialist in using cutting edge extraction technologies to recover high value components from rosemary, Azerys relies on a state-of the art facility and a strong network of local cooperatives supporting sustainable and responsible agriculture which also echoes Syensqo’s partnership in the Sustainable Guar Initiative in Rajasthan, India.

Syensqo will leverage its leading supply chain, innovation capabilities and global customer reach to accelerate the development of new product ranges aligned with its growth strategy.

Syensqo will present its advanced solutions for the food industry at IFT FIRST (Food Improved by Research, Science, and Technology) in Chicago, IL, taking place from July 14-17 (booth 4844). Visitors will have the opportunity to find out more about Syensqo’s range of solutions including natural flavors & preservatives and natural vanillin.
