Energy giants JERA Co and Samsung C&T Corporation are stepping up cooperation to build stronger, more resilient hydrogen and ammonia supply chains, signing an MoU aimed at improving energy security and accelerating the region’s transition to cleaner fuels.
The partnership will explore ways to enhance flexibility across hydrogen and ammonia value chains, including solutions for managing and separating carbon intensity attributes within storage facilities such as tanks.
The move comes as Japan and South Korea face shared challenges as energy-importing nations with limited domestic resources. Both countries are increasingly turning to hydrogen and ammonia as key fuels in their efforts to secure reliable, affordable and lower-carbon energy supplies.
JERA, Japan’s largest power generation company, is developing the country’s first integrated low-carbon ammonia value chain, covering production, transportation and utilization, with operations targeted to begin around fiscal year 2029. Samsung C&T is also advancing low-carbon ammonia infrastructure and expanding its hydrogen business portfolio in South Korea.
Both companies have gained recognition under national initiatives supporting the development of low-carbon ammonia supply chains. JERA was selected as a supplier of low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) price gap support scheme announced on December 19, 2025. Samsung C&T is building supply chain capabilities to meet rising global demand for clean ammonia.
By combining their expertise, market positions and regional capabilities, the companies aim to strengthen the foundations of emerging hydrogen and ammonia markets across Asia.
"Building resilient and commercially viable hydrogen and ammonia value chains require like-minded companies to collaborate across markets," said Irtiza Sayyed, Senior Managing Executive Officer of JERA and CEO of JERA Global Energy Solutions.
"Japan and South Korea share many common challenges and opportunities as energy import-reliant nations. Through our collaboration with Samsung C&T, we look forward to exploring practical ways to support the development of robust and commercially viable low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia markets across the region."
