MS Swaminathan, Father of India's Green Revolution, passes away at 98

Dr Swaminathan was awarded the first World Food Prize in 1987 for developing and introducing high-yielding wheat and rice varieties into India

MS Swaminathan, legendary agricultural scientist and father of India’s ‘Green Revolution,’ died at the age of 98 in Chennai on Thursday. Dr Swaminathan's groundbreaking contributions to agriculture revolutionised food security in India and earned him global recognition.

Dr Swaminathan started his career in 1949 researching on the genetics of potato, wheat, rice and jute. When India was on the verge of a mass famine leading to scarcity of food grains, Swaminathan along with Norman Borlaug and other scientists developed the high yield variety seeds of wheat.

Dr Swaminathan served as the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Agricultural Research and Education between 1972 and 1979.

Dr Swaminathan was awarded the first World Food Prize in 1987 for developing and spearheading the introduction of high-yielding wheat and rice varieties into India. He was also awarded with Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971 and the Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986. He was also honored with the Padma Shri in 1967, Padma Bhushan in 1972, and Padma Vibhushan in 1989.

In his condolence message, Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar tweeted: “Deeply pained by the passing away of M.S. Swaminathanji - the father of India's Green Revolution. His groundbreaking contribution to Indian agriculture ensured food security for the nation while contributing to the prosperity of millions of farmers. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and well-wishers during this difficult time.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the death of eminent agriculture scientist, Dr. MS Swaminathan whose "groundbreaking work in agriculture transformed the lives of millions and ensured food security for our nation." Modi tweeted:  "Deeply saddened by the demise of Dr. MS Swaminathan Ji. At a very critical period in our nation’s history, his groundbreaking work in agriculture transformed the lives of millions and ensured food security for our nation.

Beyond his revolutionary contributions to agriculture, Dr. Swaminathan was a powerhouse of innovation and a nurturing mentor to many. His unwavering commitment to research and mentorship has left an indelible mark on countless scientists and innovators.

I will always cherish my conversations with Dr. Swaminathan. His passion to see India progress was exemplary.

His life and work will inspire generations to come. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."
