Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) has announced the startup of pre-commissioning activities at a polycarbonate production complex in Tianjin, China, said the company in its recent exchange filing.

The previously announced 50-50 joint venture aims to form a $1.7-billion polycarbonate complex in Tianjin. The project was developed by Sinopec Sabic Tianjin Petrochemical Company (SSTPC), a joint venture between leading petrochemical giant Sabic and Chinese energy major Sinopec.

There is no change in the scope of the project and therefore the associated costs have not changed.

SABIC said the project’s pre-operational activities have commenced with an annual capacity of 260,000 metric tons per year, adding that the financial impact will be reflected upon the start of operations.
