Tata Chemicals Magadi awaits ministry direction in Kenya after compliance submission

Mining operations have remained suspended since July 28, 2026

  • By ICN Bureau | August 20, 2026
Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited (TCML) has submitted all information and documentation requested by Kenya’s Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, as the company waits for a decision on the suspension of its mining operations.

TCML said it has responded comprehensively to the Ministry’s concerns and demonstrated compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. The company said it remains available to provide further clarification and is continuing discussions with the Ministry and other government agencies.

Mining operations have remained suspended since July 28, 2026, following a government directive. The prolonged shutdown is raising uncertainty for employees, contractors, suppliers, local businesses and communities that depend on the company’s operations.

TCML said it respects the government’s authority to regulate Kenya’s mining sector and has cooperated fully throughout the process.

The company said it remains committed to responsible mining, environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance, while calling for an expedited review of its submissions and a clear route toward resuming operations.

The impact of the suspension extends far beyond TCML’s mining activities. Around 500 employees and their families, along with contractors, suppliers, transporters and local businesses, depend directly or indirectly on the economic activity generated by the company.

TCML said about 30,000 people in the Magadi community are direct beneficiaries of its support programmes covering water, healthcare, education, infrastructure and community development.

The company acknowledged growing concerns among residents and other stakeholders as the shutdown continues.

TCML said it remains committed to Kenya and to the communities of Magadi and Kajiado, with a focus on responsible and sustainable operations over the long term.
