Braskem, a global petrochemical company and leading developer of sustainable solutions in chemicals and plastics and ComBio, a Brazilian provider of renewable thermal energy solutions,   are collaborating on a new electric boiler project in Paulínia to reduce the carbon footprint of the petrochemical plant.

This initiative will replace some of the steam currently produced by fossil fuels, leading to an estimated 65 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions from the PP 3 PLN unit. The project is expected to start operating in the second half of 2026 and is part of Braskem's goal to cut its emissions by 15 per cent by 2030.

According to Gustavo Checcucci, Director of Energy and Industrial Decarbonization at Braskem, the project reflects the company’s long-term strategic ambition. “This project represents another important step toward increasing efficiency and reducing costs in our operations, while advancing the construction of a more sustainable production model. With this, we reaffirm our commitment to driving the transition to a low-carbon industry, while boosting productivity and competitiveness in our operations,” he said.

The partnership with ComBio is structured under a 15-year contract covering the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of the assets. Braskem will oversee operations, while ComBio will serve as the technical and commercial partner responsible for ensuring optimal equipment performance. The project also marks ComBio’s first venture into the petrochemical sector, in collaboration with the global leader in large-scale biopolymer production.

Gustavo Marchezin, ComBio’s Commercial Director, emphasized the significance of the development: “This partnership with Braskem reinforces our purpose of enabling solutions that combine sustainability, competitiveness, and energy security for the industry, whether through renewable electricity or biomass. By installing our first electric boiler for a client of Braskem’s scale, we demonstrate that it is possible to reduce costs and emissions simultaneously, accelerating the energy transition in Brazil’s chemical and petrochemical sector.”

Now in the licensing and implementation phase, the boiler is expected to begin operating in the second half of 2026. The project strengthens Braskem’s role as an active contributor to building a low-carbon industrial future, while marking a strategic expansion step for ComBio as it establishes a stronger presence in the petrochemical sector and reinforces its reputation for innovation and renewable thermal energy solutions for Brazilian industry.
