Henkel has taken a major step in its global sustainability push, announcing carbon-neutral production at two flagship Adhesive Technologies sites in India and Türkiye.
The company confirmed that its Kurkumbh site in India and Gebkim plant in Türkiye have eliminated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, marking a significant milestone in its ambition to decarbonize operations by 2030.
The twin achievements reflect Henkel’s broader science-based climate targets, which focus on cutting operational greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency, electrification, and the phase-out of fossil fuels, alongside a rapid expansion of renewable energy across its global manufacturing network.
At Kurkumbh, the transformation was driven by a full shift away from fossil fuels, replacing furnace oil–based thermic fluid heaters with high-efficiency electric systems.
The site underwent a major infrastructure overhaul, including heat-load optimization, installation of advanced heat exchangers, and expanded electrical capacity to support full electrification. Combined with the switch to 100% renewable electricity, these measures eliminated roughly 11,300 tons of CO₂ equivalent from Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
In Türkiye, Henkel’s Gebkim plant completed a landmark electrification move by replacing a natural gas–fired boiler with a high-efficiency electric boiler system. The change removed direct fossil fuel use at the site and cut Scope 1 emissions to zero, delivering an annual reduction of about 956 tons of CO₂ equivalent.
Commenting on the milestone, Simon Ulmann, VP Supply Chain & Operations IMEA, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said: “Achieving carbon-neutral production at two of our key Flagship sites in IMEA is a strong step forward in delivering on Henkel Adhesive Technologies’ global sustainability ambitions.
“Our ambition is clear: we are systematically eliminating fossil fuels from all our operations and replacing them with electrified processes powered by renewable energy. Our manufacturing milestone in both Kurkumbh and Gebkim show how we can translate our strategy into tangible impact at site level, accelerating our journey toward net-zero operations.”
At the India site, Bappa Bandyopadhyay, Director Operations & Projects India, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, said: “Achieving carbon neutrality at our Kurkumbh site underscores our strong commitment to sustainable growth, responsible manufacturing, and operational excellence.
“Through renewable energy adoption and continuous efficiency improvements, we have significantly reduced our carbon footprint while upholding the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance. This milestone shows that sustainability and business performance can advance together to create long-term value."
By scaling electrification and renewable energy adoption, Henkel is accelerating the decarbonization of its global production footprint.
The company says these site-level transformations are central to achieving its broader net-zero ambition and helping customers meet their own sustainability goals, reinforcing its push toward scalable, fossil-fuel-free manufacturing across regions.
