Chemical leader LyondellBasell has unveiled its 2025 Sustainability Report, Vision to Value: Maintaining Our Focus, delivering a clear message: even in a tough global climate, the company pushed performance, safety, and sustainability forward.
The report paints a picture of a company tightening its grip on operational discipline while accelerating its shift toward circular and low-carbon solutions. From record-breaking safety metrics to sharp emissions cuts, LYB is positioning itself as a front-runner in an industry under mounting environmental pressure.
“In 2025, despite a challenging environment, we demonstrated what focus, discipline and a clear vision can deliver,” said Peter Vanacker, LYB chief executive officer.
“We deepened partnerships across the value chain, strengthened transparency about the enablers that influence the pace of progress, and continued to make focused investments in sustainability that position us to deliver long-term value for our customers and LYB. Looking ahead, I’m confident that the actions we are taking, grounded in innovation, collaboration and strong operational performance, will help to accelerate progress and unlock opportunity in the years to come.”
Safety hits record high
LYB reported its strongest-ever safety performance, achieving a total recordable incident rate of 0.120—the lowest in its history—underscoring a relentless focus on reliability and execution across global operations.
Emissions drop sharply
The company cut scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 3.2 million metric tons. It also posted an estimated 29% reduction in scope 3 emissions compared to 2020 levels, driven largely by the shutdown of crude oil refining at its Houston site.
Circular production scales up
LYB produced and marketed around 206,000 metric tons of recycled and renewable-based polymers, using a mix of mechanical and chemical recycling along with biocircular feedstocks—meeting rising demand for lower-carbon materials.
Strategic investments stay on track
Construction is advancing on MoReTec-1, LYB’s first commercial-scale catalytic chemical recycling facility in Wesseling, Germany, with a 2027 startup target. The company emphasized disciplined investment pacing amid shifting market conditions.
Transparency push for customers
In a bid to strengthen trust and accountability, LYB secured independent certification for its life cycle assessment and product carbon footprint methodologies, giving customers clearer, more reliable sustainability data.
The report reflects a recalibrated sustainability strategy tightly aligned with business performance—built on operational strength, powered by partnerships and investment, and aimed squarely at scaling circular and low-carbon innovation.
