A major push to curb methane emissions in the Caspian region has moved into execution mode after a new agreement was signed between SOCAR and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) during Baku Energy Week.
The Cooperation Agreement, focused on implementing the Caspian Methane Emissions Abatement Accelerator initiative, was formally signed by SOCAR Vice President Afgan Isayev and Pattabi Seshadri, Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG.
The initiative itself is not new. It was first launched on 4 June 2025 at the Baku Energy Forum, where SOCAR and BCG joined forces to accelerate efforts aimed at minimizing methane emissions by 2030.
Under the framework, the programme is designed to strengthen regional cooperation on methane reduction across the Caspian, enable joint research and studies, support collaborative mitigation projects, and promote the sharing of best practices. It also aims to drive practical emissions-cutting measures across oil and gas operations in the region.
The latest agreement signals a shift from planning to implementation, as stakeholders look to turn climate commitments into measurable reductions in methane output over the coming years.
