Topsoe and Westling partner on Nebraska blue ammonia plant to strengthen US fertilizer supply

Designed to produce approximately 500 short tons per day (STPD) of blue ammonia using natural gas as a feedstock

Topsoe, a global leader in advanced technology and solutions for the energy transition, has signed a pact with Nebraska-based J Westling & Co (JWC) to advance domestic blue ammonia production and help secure a more resilient fertilizer supply chain for American farmers.

Through the partnership, Topsoe will provide its industry-leading SynCOR Ammonia technology, proprietary equipment, and catalysts for JWC’s planned blue ammonia facility in Gothenburg, Nebraska. Once operational, the plant will produce low-carbon ammonia fertilizer for farmers across the region, supporting agricultural productivity while reducing dependence on long-distance fertilizer transportation.

Designed to produce approximately 500 short tons per day (STPD) of blue ammonia using natural gas as a feedstock, the facility will mark the first deployment of Topsoe’s SynCOR Ammonia autothermal reforming technology specifically dedicated to low-carbon fertilizer production.

The project highlights the growing role of advanced ammonia technologies in strengthening food security, energy resilience, and domestic industrial capacity. With ammonia transportation from the Gulf Coast to Nebraska currently costing an estimated $100–$120 per ton, local production will help eliminate significant logistics costs for regional customers while improving supply reliability.

Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director, The Americas, Topsoe, said: "This project is about strengthening domestic supply chains that farmers depend on every day. We are proud to support JWC’s investment in US-based fertilizer production that produces blue low-carbon ammonia fertilizers to support domestic supply of critical agricultural outputs.”

Joshua Westling, Founder and CEO of J Westling & Co, said: "Nebraska farmers help feed the world. For the sake of both their bottom line, America’s supply chain resilience, and the families worldwide who rely on their products, those farmers should be able to source reliable, high-quality inputs like ammonia fertilizer closer to home.

"This exciting partnership with Topsoe will allow the team at JWC to provide exactly that. We’re excited to leverage Topsoe’s top-of-the-line technology to deliver world-class fertilizer to farmers across the region and support good-paying jobs in rural Nebraska.”
