Umicore has officially opened its new innovation center in Shanghai, marking the company’s first corporate research and development facility outside Europe.

The center aims to strengthen the connection between the global materials technology and recycling company's local business operations and its innovation initiatives.

Situated in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone and covering roughly 3,600 square meters, the facility is designed as a hub for cutting-edge R&D and collaborative projects. It will support initiatives within Umicore’s global research portfolio and foster partnerships with leading Chinese universities, companies, and institutes.

“Innovation has always been central to Umicore’s strategy. To make a meaningful impact, it must be close to customers and connected to ecosystems, enabling us to move faster. The Innovation Center in Shanghai is fully embedded in Umicore’s global Corporate Research & Development network.

"We are here to collaborate — with local universities, research institutes, industrial partners, customers, and our own production and technology teams,” said Geert Olbrechts, Umicore Chief Technology Officer and EVP Recycling.

Initially, the Shanghai center will focus on fuel cell applications and recycling technologies, with plans to expand into catalysis for renewable energy and stationary applications, including CO₂ capture and hydrogen production.

The new center reinforces Umicore’s four-decade-long presence in China while advancing the company’s global R&D ambitions.
