The project, scheduled for completion by late 2029, is designed to support rapid population growth and enable up to 200,000 new household connections

A major wastewater infrastructure project is set to reshape Sydney’s fast-growing north-west, with KBR and its partners securing a AUD$300 million contract to expand treatment capacity and unlock housing for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Working as part of the North West Hub Alliance (NWHA) alongside Sydney Water, John Holland and Stantec, KBR will deliver the next phase of critical upgrades across the region. The project, scheduled for completion by late 2029, is designed to support rapid population growth and enable up to 200,000 new household connections.

Under this second stage—known as Scheme 2—the alliance will take on full responsibility for the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of key facilities at Riverstone, Rouse Hill and Castle Hill Water Resource Recovery Facilities.

The scale and urgency of the project underscore its importance to the state’s housing pipeline.

Margaret Riley, Director, Water, said, “Expanding the wastewater treatment capability in Sydney’s north-west is one of the most significant water infrastructure projects in the state, and a crucial investment to ensure rapid housing growth is supported.

Enabling housing growth requires an innovative and collaborative approach, and KBR is proud to continue working as part of the North West Hub Alliance, supporting Sydney Water into the next phase of this program.”

Scheme 2 builds on momentum from earlier works already underway. Scheme 1 has delivered major upgrades across the North West Treatment Hub, including a new biosolids handling plant at Riverstone and enhancements at Rouse Hill, laying the groundwork for future expansion.

KBR is also breaking new ground on sustainability, leading the first Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC) V2.1 Silver rating for a water infrastructure project in Australia. The company says its team is driving innovative solutions to emerging challenges in the sector, with lessons from the project expected to influence water infrastructure development nationwide.
