Honeywell supercharges Dangote refinery in push to double fuel output

The company will roll out its advanced Performance+ Services across critical processing units

Global engineering and automation giant Honeywell is doubling down on its role in one of the world’s most ambitious energy projects in Nigeria.

The company has announced a major expansion of its digital and operational footprint at Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery — the largest single-train refinery on the planet.

The Honeywell will roll out its advanced Performance+ Services across critical processing units at the massive Lekki-based facility, aiming to push production of high-octane fuels to peak levels.

Powered by the Honeywell Forge platform and backed by the company’s refining experts, the system will deliver real-time operational intelligence — spotting risks before they escalate and guiding operators toward maximum efficiency.

The move comes as global energy demand surges, putting pressure on refineries to perform at unprecedented levels.

“As global energy demand grows, refineries must operate with greater agility, reliability and efficiency,” said Ken West, president and CEO of Honeywell Process Technology.

“Honeywell’s Connected Solutions pair advanced automation and digital capabilities with more than a century of deep refining expertise to help customers like Dangote improve operational performance, enhance asset reliability and unlock greater value from their facilities.”

But the partnership goes beyond software. Honeywell is also equipping the refinery’s workforce with cutting-edge training tools, including immersive simulators built from digital replicas of the plant.

These systems will allow operators to rehearse complex, real-world scenarios in a risk-free environment — sharpening skills as production ramps up.

For Aliko Dangote, the refinery is more than infrastructure — it’s a statement of global ambition.

“The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is designed to set a new global benchmark for scale, efficiency and output,” said Aliko Dangote, President, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE.

“Honeywell’s Performance+ Services and training programs support our ability to maximize output and achieve operational excellence by developing local talent to run operations safely and reliably as we ramp up production to meet the world’s growing energy needs.”

Already employing over 3,000 Nigerians, the refinery is engineered to fully satisfy domestic fuel demand while generating surplus for export. Its output includes Euro-V grade gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene — a crucial material for plastics and packaging industries.

Now, the stakes are getting even higher. Building on nearly a decade of collaboration, Honeywell’s technologies are set to supercharge the refinery’s capacity — more than doubling output from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day within three years.

The expansion aims to squeeze more performance from existing assets while accelerating delivery to global markets.
