WABAG and PEAK launch first bio-CNG project in Ghaziabad to convert wastewater into clean fuel

The project will be developed at the 70 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant in Dundaheda

VA TECH WABAG and PEAK Sustainability Ventures have announced their first Bio-CNG project in Ghaziabad, marking a key step in their broader waste-to-energy partnership aimed at scaling 100 Bio-CNG plants across India and international markets.

The project will be developed at the 70 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant in Dundaheda, Ghaziabad, under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Public-Private Partnership model. It will be executed through a newly formed special purpose vehicle, GHAZIABAD BIOENERGY PRIVATE LIMITED, jointly incorporated by WABAG and PEAK.

At its core, the initiative captures raw biogas generated at the sewage treatment facility and upgrades it into high-quality Bio-CNG. This prevents methane—one of the most potent greenhouse gases—from entering the atmosphere while converting waste into a usable clean fuel for mobility and industrial applications.

The companies describe the project as a circular, scalable model for India’s energy transition, while also positioning it as a locally produced renewable gas alternative that can ease pressure on LNG and CNG supply chains.

The environmental impact is significant. Methane carries nearly 28 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and the project is expected to reduce approximately 250,000 metric tons of carbon emissions over its lifetime. Commercial operations are targeted to begin within one year.

Beyond emissions reduction, the project is expected to improve local air quality and create employment opportunities. WABAG will also make a reverse tipping fee payment to Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam for the biogas, while all major equipment will be domestically sourced in alignment with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Under the arrangement, WABAG will lead execution and operate and maintain the facility for 15 years. PEAK will contribute strategic expertise, global energy technology insights, and assist in mobilizing climate-focused capital to scale the initiative further.

Speaking on the development, Shailesh Kumar, CEO – India Cluster, WABAG, said that securing this repeat order from an existing client, Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN), reflects WABAG’s strong operational excellence and consistent execution capabilities.

"We thank GNN for their continued confidence and trust in WABAG. He emphasized that the Company’s focus is to create greater value for its clients by leveraging its technical expertise during both execution and operations. He also praised the visionary leadership of Ghaziabad Nagar Nigam (GNN) for pioneering this innovative initiative to convert wastewater into clean energy and revenue."

Samir Shah, Managing Partner, PEAK, added, “This partnership between PEAK and WABAG aims to accelerate India’s energy transition by converting methane generated by waste water plants into a clean fuel - CBG. This important initiative strengthens energy security, reduces air pollution, and showcases financially viable climate solutions for India and global markets, leading to a clean energy future.”
