In a decisive move set to reshape India’s incense stick sector, the All India Agarbathi Manufacturers Association (AIAMA) has announced the implementation of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification across the agarbathi industry.
This a landmark step is aimed at elevating quality, safety, and global competitiveness. The initiative also signals a turning point for one of India’s most traditional yet economically significant industries.
By aligning manufacturing practices with BIS-certified standards, AIAMA is also raising the bar on fragrance longevity, raw material safety, burning performance, and emission levels across machine-made, hand-rolled, and masala incense varieties.
The certification drive is designed to deliver greater transparency and trust, empowering consumers to make informed choices while strengthening the credibility of Indian agarbathi brands in domestic and international markets.
Crucially, AIAMA has pledged that the transition will be inclusive. Recognising that small-scale and cottage manufacturers form the backbone of the sector, the association is rolling out awareness programmes, technical guidance, and capacity-building initiatives to ensure compliance is accessible to enterprises of all sizes. The goal: modernisation without marginalising traditional artisans.
India’s agarbathi industry supports millions of livelihoods and remains a powerful cultural symbol. With BIS certification, AIAMA is positioning the sector for future growth while reinforcing its legacy of craftsmanship and authenticity.
Speaking on the initiative, Ambica Ramanjaneyulu, President, AIAMA said: “The adoption of BIS certification is a milestone in our collective journey. It reflects our dedication to quality, sustainability, and consumer trust. More importantly, it ensures that every stakeholder, from large manufacturers to cottage artisans, can now thrive in a system that values both tradition and innovation.”
Founded in 1949, AIAMA serves as the apex body representing the agarbathi industry, with hundreds of active members across India.
