Gevo, a leader in renewable fuels, chemicals, and carbon management, has announced that it has been granted a US patent to expand renewable fuel and chemical technology.

This patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office bolsters protections for various catalyst combinations and explicitly covers the use of Ethanol-to-Olefins (ETO) technology for fuel production.

Gevo is collaborating with LG Chem to advance next-generation ETO processes for renewable chemicals and with Axens and IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) for fuel applications.

The patented process converts ethanol into light olefins, which can then be transformed into transportation fuels using Gevo’s commercially proven Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technologies. Olefins also provide cost-effective renewable chemical building blocks, including bio-propylene. Gevo says its ETO advancements are expected to reduce capital and operating costs by up to 35% compared to current methods.

“We are actively developing the most efficient pathways to convert ethanol to fuels and chemicals,” said Dr.Paul Bloom, president of Gevo. “The effort by our team to secure this patent expands our proprietary technology position and enhances a pathway to renewable jet fuel that is more cost-effective for Gevo and our partners. We continue to build an intellectual property portfolio that we believe will put Gevo in a cost-leadership position on ATJ for years to come.”

Gevo plans to lead ETO technology deployment in North America, creating jobs and boosting economic development in rural areas, while Axens is expected to provide licensing, equipment, and engineering services on a global scale.
